A recent American study revealed that women who suffer from a lack of iodine, the chances of their pregnancy decreasing in half compared to women with healthy levels of this element.

The researchers tracked more than 500 women who wanted to conceive during a period of about five years and found that women with moderate or severe iodine deficiency decreased their chances of becoming pregnant by 46 percent, according to Reuters.

“We were surprised by the prevalence of iodine deficiency (in women) and by the fact that it reduces the chances of giving birth by about 50 percent in each menstrual cycle,

” said Dr. James Mills, who led the study team from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Maryland, USA.

vital role

Iodine plays a vital role in brain development during pregnancy.

The researchers wrote in the Journal of Human Reproduction that previous research found that iodine levels in about 30 percent of women of childbearing age are less than 100 micrograms per liter of blood, which is the normal level.

Current US guidelines suggest that pregnant and breastfeeding women take a supplement that contains 150 micrograms of iodine, but these recommendations do not address what a woman should do before pregnancy.

Iodine is found in fish, especially white fish,

seafood, milk and dairy products.

Some salts contain iodine, but women should not rely on salt only to get more iodine.

“This issue has not been addressed yet for women who are trying to conceive … so it is better to choose the right diet,

and many experts believe that taking prenatal iodine vitamins is a good idea,” said Mills.
